Use this professional reference table to select the correct gauge (mm²) for your cables. For 12V in a van, the maximum tolerated voltage drop is 3%. Always use multi-stranded flexible automotive wire.
| Current (A) | Round trip < 2m | Round trip 4m | Round trip 6m |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5A (LEDs, USB) | 1.5 mm² | 2.5 mm² | 4 mm² |
| 10A (Fridge, Pump) | 2.5 mm² | 4 mm² | 6 mm² |
| 20A (Heater) | 4 mm² | 10 mm² | 10 mm² |
| 50A (DC/DC Booster) | 10 mm² | 16 mm² | 25 mm² |
| 100A (Inverter) | 25 mm² | 35 mm² | 50 mm² |
The fuse protects the wire, not the appliance. Always place it as close to the power source as possible (battery or busbar).

Where the Orion-Tr shines: Bluetooth monitoring via VictronConnect app shows real-time input/output voltage, current, and charging state. You can adjust charge profiles without crawling behind the battery. It integrates with the Victron ecosystem if you have a SmartShunt or Cerbo GX. Where it falls short: 30A is sometimes not enough. If you have a 300Ah bank and drive 1-2 hours/day, 30A puts in 360-720Wh — that might not cover a heavy consumption day. Victron's solution: parallel two Orion-Tr 30A units for 60A. But that's $400-500 for 720W of alternator charging. The Renogy DCC50S does 50A for $150-200 AND has a built-in MPPT solar input — potentially replacing two devices with one. The trade-off: no Victron ecosystem, no VE.Direct integration, and Renogy's app is less polished. For all-Victron builds: Orion-Tr is the obvious choice. For budget builds: the Renogy DCC50S offers better value.
